All ELO rating systems use a pre-defined rating for contestants entering the population to rate the result of their first event. Most use the assigned average, in our case 1500, to calculate their opening rating.
New Zealander Shane Van Gisbergen won his debut NASCAR race on the Chicago Street Course this past weekend. The victory vaulted him ‘average’ to the eighth-best currently ranked driver. As Van Gisbergen was the first driver in about sixty years to win a NASCAR Cup on his first attempt, his opening rating move must be one of the highest if not the best in the series history.1 As the CIELO rebirth continues, the investigation of a driver’s ‘open’ will be on my to-do list.
